PREPARATION FOR THE CELEBRATION OF SACRAMENTS*
(* Based on Diocese of Trenton Sacramental Guidelines)

Preparation for the Celebration of the Sacrament
  • Is the responsibility of the parish of celebration, Holy Eucharist
  • Takes place in a process which is separate from and scheduled at a different time from the formal catechesis of weekly children’s faith formation, intergenerational faith formation, and St. Mary’s School
  • Involves the whole parish community
  • Includes parent formation sessions to assist parents to fully participate in their child’s preparation.
  • Consists of events and activities such as days/evenings of preparation, reflection and retreats which take their focus from the sacramental rite, its symbols, prayers, gestures etc.

Role of Parents/Guardians
  • The faith formation of children and their preparation to celebrate the sacraments is primarily the responsibility of parents. Father Andrew, as pastor, faith formation coordinators, catechists and the parish community share this responsibility and assist parents to bring their child to the fullness of a life of discipleship through prayer, support, formal catechetical programs and preparation processes.
  • Parents prepare their children for sacraments by first serving as an example through their own regular participation in the Sunday Eucharist, their own modeling of prayer and service, and their active participation in the life of the parish community.
  • Parents have the privilege, right and responsibility to be intimately involved in preparing their children for sacraments.
  • Parents are expected to attend parent sessions so that their ability to participate in the preparation of their child to receive the sacrament is enhanced.

Role of the Parish Community
  • The parish community is the place of preparation and celebration of the sacraments
  • Parents and children celebrate sacraments together as a regular part of their participation in parish life and worship.
  • The parish community welcomes, supports, and initiates children into the life and practice of faith.
  • Preparation for the celebration of sacraments include blessings, prayers and activities that involve the parish community.

First Reconciliation/First Eucharist Sacrament Preparation

  • The Diocese requires that children must be involved in formal preparation for the sacraments one year prior to their reception. Children at Level 1 who have had continuous attendance for the year 2010-2011 at St. Mary’s School, Children’s Faith Formation (Classroom), or Faith Fest (Intergenerational) for that year fulfill this requirement.
  • Preparation for Reconciliation and First Eucharist includes:
  • Weekly attendance at weekend Mass
  • Attendance and active participation at all formal catechesis: St. Mary’s School, Children’s Faith Formation (Classroom), or Faith Fest (Intergenerational)
  • Participation in all parent and child sacrament preparation sessions which provide an opportunity for parent and child to grow in the understanding of the sacraments
  • Completion of any home assignments (if necessary)
  • Providing a copy of the child’s Baptismal certificate (if not baptized at
  • Holy Eucharist)
  • Completion of Sacramental Information Form with picture of child
  • Sacrament Preparation fee - $30 (includes Reconciliation & Eucharist) Checks may be written to Holy Eucharist Church.
  • Participation in parent/child rehearsals
  • All candidates who have received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are encouraged to continue receiving the Eucharist weekly and to receive the Lord’s gift of forgiveness when needed (once or twice a year is recommended)
